Kiira EV Smack - Made in Uganda

The Kiira EV Smack is the brainchild of students at Makerere University in Uganda. In 2011 they developed the "Kiira EV Proof of Concept" and since then they have made advances on the design.

The EV Smack is a 5-seater electric hybrid vehicle with a rechargeable battery and houses an internal combustion engine based generator which charges the battery.

Some of the parts were designed and sourced locally while others although designed by the team were manufactured abroad and as one of the design team said, “Most manufacturers import some parts for their cars”.

The project is being backed by the Ugandan government and they have already invested $70M, a further $350M is being sought to set up an assembly plant and commence production of the car this year (2018).

The cost of the car is said to be around $30,000 which is a bit pricey for the average Ugandan, but there will be hire purchase deals over 5 years for the not so well off.

All in all, good news for the continent and it’s pleasing to see the great strides that are now being made in Afrika regarding technology and industry.
